This year I bought a part from a banjohangout member and it never arrived.
He asked for it to be paid by money order and I sent an Australian post money order for over $400Aust.
The seller never sent a receipt or any postage information. When I contacted him he would not give me any details except a lot of excuses. I never did get my parts or any money back. Now he will not answer any emails I send to him. I lost my money and that is that.
My warning to you is make sure you get a receipt of some kind and only pay with paypal, escrow or visa. This way you have solid proof and can recoop your money. A USA sender has to file a customs declaration form so ask for that number also. Always get them to register and get insurance. Even though it costs extra you are covered.
Importing can cost you more than what you might expect. Check with Customs Australia for all the details.
Anything over $1000 Aust will cost you at least 15% extra. Therefore if you buy a $1000US banjo you need to pay post and insurance about $350US. That becomes about $1600Aust depending on exchange rate. Now add 15% to the price of the banjo = around $106Aust. So $1706Aust plus postage of over $400Aust = about $2100.
Now imagine buying a banjo over $5000US+. Also once the banjo is in your hands it may have a problem or breakage from shipping. If you want it repaired or looked at you have to pay postage back. Some dealers will also send blemished or damaged items because they know we carnt afford to send them back. This happened to me some years back which really disappointed me. I also over paid and could of had a much better banjo for the same money or paid a few hunderd more and bought a big name banjo.
Which leads me to this comment.
We are selling our Eureka banjo at $4500Aust which may seem alot of money. But we are here in Australia to offer service, repairs, parts, chat, anything you want. This is a $5000US+ banjo all day long without the headache of importing, dealing with exchange rates and customs. worrying of damage all the way from the USA etc.
Our price is the best you will find for an all maple banjo with all the right parts on it. These banjos are quality all the way, no short cuts or saving money on cheap parts or noname products, we seriously have done the best job we could building these.
We will do our best to get out there so you can play and see them for yourself.
